"A dead man is absolutely silent. Nobody can disturb him, his concentration is perfect. You cannot do anything to distract his mind; his mind is absolutely fixed. Even if the whole world goes mad all around, he will remain in his concentration."

Tilt-o-whirl rise and plummet
Stalled in the sky and loved it...

and later it goes:

wired on raw good luck

hooray for track 1 on Burning Airlines' Mission: Control!

It joins the list with Rush's Lakeside Park and the Cardigans' Carnival as kickass carnival songs. I am leaving a few out, but I am just awake between naps, so I'm drowzee.

No content, just feeling

Freewill just came on the radio. I like Rush songs a lot, and I like this one a lot for a Rush song. People are always like, just listen to the song; but when your Anthem comes on the motherfucking air, it's like...

And you're taken away. Your head starts nodding, body parts start tapping, hell, your heart rate synchs to the backbeat. And you know, you know, that 10,000 other maniacs out there are listening to what you are listening to, and feeling what you feel, because they just have to be. How could they not love this song? It's a great song!

I'd post the lyrics if I weren't tired/busy getting ready for work.

"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."

And if you're wondering about emo, about geek rock, about Weezer and all those bands (but especially Weezer) that make MathRock/NerdRock songs... this is where it started; with Talking Heads, with progressive rock, with Rush:

"Genetic blends with uncertain ends / on a fortune hunt that's far too fleet."

As Becca pointed out to me on the phone the other day, a lot of my "work" borrows heavily from Rush; even the basic rhyme schemes. So, umm... yeah... Rush is very important to me; my dad's fault. I've been listening to it since I was in the womb. Immersed; and impressed. If you don't like Geddy's screeching, listen to the later stuff. Their 80's work (especially Hold Your Fire; which features guest vox by Aimee Mann on Time Stand Still) is largely ignored, but it's still fucking amazing.

I don't use the word "fan" lightly, because I take it to mean "fanatic." I like the Police a lot, I have (almost) all of Metallica's albums, but I wouldn't consider myself a fan. Could I talk to Sting or Lars and Het for an hour or so about their music? Probably. Could I talk to them for three or four? And about how their music has shaped/influenced/just plain rocked my life? Pro'lly not; I'm not that talkative.
